With more than two decades of experience as a member of the Alaska Hospitalist Group, Michael Mullowney, MD, has delivered care in a variety of clinical settings. As a busy internist in a high-volume environment, he managed the treatment of critically ill patients in intensive care units and directed operations of medicine at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna, Alaska, for over a decade. Michael Mullowney, MD, also directed the Alaska Regional Hospital Rehabilitation Department and presented numerous community lectures on topics such as medications, dementia, and pneumonia.
Since March 2026, Dr. Mullowney has served as a Hospitalist at Kona Community Hospital in Kona, Hawaii. In this role, he admits and manages hospitalized patients on medical wards and in intensive care units, providing comprehensive inpatient care for individuals with acute and complex medical conditions. He collaborates with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to develop treatment plans, oversee patient care throughout hospitalization, and facilitate smooth transitions of care upon discharge.
Moreover, Dr. Mullowney has volunteered with medical missions worldwide and worked in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, assisting attending physicians at wound care and tuberculosis clinics. As a volunteer at Angkor Hospital for Children in Cambodia in the early 2000s, he combined direct patient care with mentoring local physicians. Dr. Mullowney has also served as a visiting physician at Beijing University Hospital, treating patients in various medical wards while lecturing and mentoring residents and medical students.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Mullowney has an eye for architecture and residential design and envisioned a custom home in Alaska that attained nationwide recognition in 2012. He maintains a strong interest in green technologies and sustainable solutions, including solar panels for water heating and electricity generation, as well as water catchment systems that help minimize water use.
